MADM 115 Human Relations in Healthcare

Emphasis on team building, interpersonal conflict variables, listening and seeking information, styles and behavior patterns, and negotiation skills.
MADM 121 Health Information Management

Principles of medical record management. Includes creation, analysis, preservation, and retrieval of health information. PREREQ: MADM 113.
MADM 125 Employment Skills for the Medical Office
(3 Credits, Fall/Spring)
Preparation for the job search by researching potential employers online as well as communication through cover letters, resumes, online applications, and practice interviews. Develops awareness of policy and procedure manuals including discipline policies up to and including termination, and other written and unwritten rules for success, such as professional courtesy, appearance, and grooming. PREREQ: MADM 113.
MADM 223 Integrated Medical Office Software
(3 Credits, Fall/Spring)
Principles and use of an integrated medical practice management and electronic health record system (PM/EHR) in a medical office setting. Emphasis on patient scheduling, submitting electronic bills, and documenting patient encounters. PREREQ: BUSA 120, and MADM 113 or MEDA 131.
MADM 233 Medical Coding
(3 Credits, Varies)
Principles and technical knowledge of medical coding and billing. Using the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and the International Classification of Diseases - Clinical Modification coding books, students will transform written descriptions of diseases, injuries, and procedures into numeric designations. This course covers all medical specialties including dermatology, cardiology, primary care, and orthopedics, as well as addressing the common coding problems encountered in the real world. Skill emphasis is placed on knowledge of coding theories and practical coding applications. PREREQ: MADM 121 or MEDA 201.
MADM 240 Health Insurance and Billing
(3 Credits, Fall/Spring)
This course is an introduction to health insurance rules and guidelines as they relate to the billing in both the outpatient physician office setting as well as the inpatient/outpatient hospital settings. This course is designed to emphasize the revenue cycle - ten steps that clearly identify all the components needed to successfully manage the medical insurance claims process. PREREQ: MADM 121.
MADM 290 Field Experience and Capstone
(4 Credits, Fall/Spring)
This course is designed to integrate classroom material with experiential learning through field experience in a healthcare setting and a face-to-face collaborative seminar. FIELD EXPERIENCE COMPONENT: Application of technical knowledge and skills in community healthcare and/or office settings to gain practical work experience. An individual contract arrangement between the student, instructor, and employer is required and will be monitored and evaluated by appropriate faculty in consultation with training site supervisor. Successful completion of the on-site experience requires 144 hours over at least 12 weeks of on-site training. CAPSTONE COMPONENT: Classroom material is integrated with the experiential learning of the field experience during a face-to-face meeting. Course synthesizes material from the entire curriculum as well as the field experience in a collaborative, business-style setting. Students will prepare for and complete the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant exam (Technical Skills Assessment). PREREQ: Permission of the department's internship coordinator.
