Basic concepts, principles, and theories of nursing practice with an emphasis on the five components of the nursing process. PNUR 110L Fundamentals of Nursing Clinical

PNUR 115 Mental Health
(2 Credits, Spring)

Students will learn the concepts of mental health that apply to the scope of practice for a practical nurse. Topics include identification of and interventions for common mood and personality disorders, as well as dementia, schizophrenia, and addiction. Emphasis is placed on improving mental health across the lifespan, integrating principles of therapeutic communication, and advocating for the patient's mental health needs. PNUR 120 Nursing Care of the Elderly
(2 Credits, Summer)

Overview of common acute and chronic health conditions encountered among the older adult population in a variety of environments. Includes physical and psychological responses to the aging process as well as preventative and restorative measures provided by the practical nurse caring for older patients. Also includes end of life care options. PREREQ: PNUR 110, PNUR 110L, and PNUR 115 with a minimum grade of C or equivalent. COREQ: PNUR 120L. PRE/COREQ: PNUR 125. PNUR 120L Nursing Care of the Elderly Clinical

Required clinical to accompany PNUR 120. Students will analyze common acute and chronic health conditions within the older adult population and use knowledge, evidence, and nursing science to plan and provide quality nursing care in a long-term care setting. PNUR 125 Pharmacology for Practical Nursing

Overview of pharmacology with an emphasis on clinical applications within the context of the nursing process and prioritization of needs. Consideration is given to the physiological, psychosocial, and cultural needs of patients. Includes indications, mechanism of action, desired effects, side effects, contraindications, interactions, and nursing responsibilities for selected drugs. PNUR 130 Comprehensive Care of Adults

Examination of complex healthcare conditions and their effect on multiple body systems, as well as advanced nursing interventions within the adult population in an acute care setting. Clinical experiences highlight the delivery of safe and competent advanced nursing care within the acute care setting and preparation for transition to other care options. PNUR 130L Comprehensive Care of Adults Clinical

Required clinical providing experiential learning to accompany PNUR 130. Clinical experiences highlight the delivery of safe and competent advanced nursing care within the acute care setting and preparation for transition to other care options. Students will learn to make connections between the theory and practice of nursing. (Pass/No Pass) PREREQ: PNUR 120, PNUR 120L, and PNUR 125 with a minimum grade of C or equivalent. COREQ: PNUR 130. PNUR 140 Nursing Care of the Developing Family

Nursing care of individuals and families across the lifespan and among different cultures. Topics include care of the obstetric and newborn patient and women's and adolescents' health. Theories of growth and development, as well as Erikson's life stages, are used to frame topics. Emphasis is placed on the practical nurse's role in the preservation and promotion of health. PREREQ: PNUR 120, PNUR 120L, and PNUR 125 with a minimum grade of C or equivalent. PRE/COREQ: PNUR 130, PNUR 130L, PNUR 150, and PNUR 150L. (3 lecture hours, 0 lab hours, 3 credits)

PNUR 150 Transition to Practice

This course utilizes the knowledge and skills acquired in previous courses within the program to facilitate a seamless transition from student to practical nurse. Students discuss the role of the practical nurse, including the professionalism and collaboration that are needed to be seen as a valuable member of the healthcare team. PREREQ: PNUR 120, PNUR 120L, and PNUR 125 with a minimum grade of C or equivalent. COREQ: PNUR 150L. PRE/COREQ: PNUR 130, PNUR 130L, and PNUR 140. (1 lecture hours, 0 lab hours, 1 credits)

PNUR 150L Transition to Practice Clinical

Required lab to accompany PNUR 150. Students are provided with an opportunity to work in a healthcare setting with an assigned licensed preceptor, gain confidence in their role, and build on the identity of the practical nurse as a valuable member of the healthcare team.
